Review of Relative Clause

I. Teaching objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

1. review basic knowledge and some special usage of relative clause;

2. choose correct relatives to solve some grammatical problems;

3. adopt relative clauses to enrich sentence patterns and make passages more concise;

4. learn the causes and symptoms of stress and come up with strategies to deal with it.

II. Teaching difficulty

1. distinguish between relative clauses and noun clauses;

2. make up their own sentences based on restricted rules.

III. Teaching procedures      

Step 1 Lead-in

Free talk.

【设计意图】以语法具有挑战性与学生交流自然导入stress话题,进入语法复习。

Step 2 Review basic knowledge

Activity1: use mind map to review basic knowledge about relative clause.

[Qs.] What is relative clause? What are the steps to solve the questions of relative clauses? What are the basic usages of relative clause?

Activity 2: read special usage of relative clause.

【设计意图】用思维导图的方式帮助学生回顾定语从句的基本知识及基本用法;朗读定语从句特殊用法进行知识强化巩固。

Step 3 Link to NEMT

Activity 1: grammar

Fill in the blanks with proper words in 4 levels—challenge 1 -4.

【设计意图】链接高考,解决语法填空的问题。本环节以单句填空形式呈现,设计为四层挑战,难度层层递进,训练单句填空中与定语从句相关的易错考点:辨析关系代词与关系副词;只用that, who, which的情况;抽象的地点状语;定语从句中介词搭配、主谓一致;定语从句与名词性从句、状语从句辨析。

Activity 2: a letter from Amy

Have students fill in the blanks with proper relatives.

【设计意图】用Amy表达高三压力大的求助信来巩固关系词的基本用法,同时紧扣本节课“stress”这一话题。

Activity 3: writing

Task 1: make the sentences more colorful. Have students complete the sentences with relative clauses.

[Q]: What are the causes of your stress?

Task 2: make the passage more concise. Have students combine the sentences to make the given passage more concise.

[Q]: What are the symptoms when you feel stressed out?

【设计意图】链接高考定语从句在写作中的意义:丰富句式;让篇章变得清晰简洁。结合话题语境,联系学生实际,剖析压力产生的原因及症状,为下一环节作铺垫。

Task 3: watch a TED video about the fact about stress.

Task 4: come up with strategies to deal with stress by adopting relative clauses.

【设计意图】通过TED的演讲让学生明白,压力并不可怕,只要有勇气面对,压力可以转换为前进的动力。联系话题语境与学生实际,针对压力提出应对方法,综合运用定语从句的句式表达。同时,这些建议也可以送给在高三面对压力的Amy,为晚上的作业提供帮助。

Step 4 Sentence game

Have students place sentence game in groups of 4. Based on restricted rules, make up their own relative sentences related to “stress”.

【设计意图】将本课的话题--从压力的起因、来源到解决办法与定语从句的基本规则相结合,以小组合作的形式让学生创造和话题相关的定语从句,达到整合运用的效果。

. Homework

1. Link to NEMT—reading (on student’s sheet);

2. Writing—a letter to Amy.

请结合Amy求助信的内容给她回一封信,内容包括:1.表示理解;     2.提出建议(至少2)

要求:1. 写作词数应为80左右;2. 至少用两句定语从句。

【设计意图】作业1是定语从句在高考中的另一应用:提升阅读能力。五道微技能训练的答案均涉及对定语从句的理解。让学生通过完成作业体会到学好定语从句的重要性。作业2是给Amy的建议信,结合本节课压力这一话题再次巩固定语从句;给Amy提出建议,同时对自身压力进行疏导。
