18-year-old Brennan Smith, a colorblind boy, started his custom(定制的) sock business in middle school, with a small load(贷款) he got from his parents. Up till now, he has sold over $1 million worth of socks online in the last four years.
Brennan thought of the idea for his custom sock company at just 13 years old. He was attending a high school basketball game in his hometown of Sherwood, Oregon, and noticed that many kids of his age were wearing the same white Nike sport socks. The boy told himself that if these white plain socks were so popular with kids, then some cool custom designs would surely be an even greater hit.
But the boy didn’t tell his parents about the business idea at once. He spent six months researching and drawing up a business plan. When he had everything planned out, he asked his parents for a loan. “They thought the idea was a little out there,” Brennan recently told CNN Money, but he kept pushing, and at last received a $3,000 loan to start his company. Then he began to work on his own designs. The fact that he was colorblind didn’t stop him and he has created over 200 designs now.
Business was slow the first year, but then Brennan started pushing his HoopSwagg products(产品) heavily on the Internet. Orders soon started coming in in large numbers, and HoopSwagg became a popular brand among custom sock lovers. Right now, his designs can be found on HoopSwagg website, Amazon and eBay.
Four years after starting his business, Brennan has achieved great success while balancing school, housework and social life. And he says he loved every minute of it.

Spending two or three hours playing outdoors each day can reduce the chance of becoming short-sighted(近视), a research shows. It challenges the belief(信念) that short-sightedness is caused by computer use, watching TV or reading in weak light.
The Australian government researchers believe that the sunlight is good for people’s eyes. They studied the vision(视力) and habits of 100 seven-year-old children in Singapore and Australia. In all, 30% of the Singaporean children were short-sighted—this rate(比率) was ten times higher than Australian children.
Both groups spend a similar amount(数量) of time reading, watching television and playing computer games. However the Singaporean children spent an average (平均) of only half an hour a day outdoors—90 minutes less than the Australian children.
Professor Ian Morgan, from the Australian Research Council’s vision Centre, said, “Humans are naturally long-sighted, but when people begin to go to school and spend little or no time outdoors, the number of short-sighted people gets larger. We’re also seeing more and more short-sighted children in cities all around the world and the main reason may be that city children spend less time outdoors.
Daylight can be hundreds of times brighter than indoor light. But why does playing outside prevent us from becoming short-sighted ? Scientists believe that natural light has a special chemical(化学物质) which stops the eyeball from growing out of shape and prevents people from becoming short-sighted.
So be outdoors. It doesn’t matter if that time is spent having a picnic or having sports.
51. How much time did the Australian children spend outdoors on average according to the
research?
A. 30 minutes. B. 60 minutes. C. 90 minutes D. 120 minutes.
52. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. If people spend less time outdoors, they will certainly become short-sighted.
B. There are fewer short-sighted Singaporean Children than Australian children because they
have more knowledge of protecting their eyesight.
C. There will be fewer risks of getting short-sighted if people spend two or three hours a day
playing outside.
D. When people begin to go to school, they will become long-sighted.
53. The fifth paragraph is mainly about__________________________________________.
A. why natural daylight has a special chemical
B. why daylight prevents people from becoming short-sighted
C. why daylight is much brighter than indoor light
D. what the special chemical which can stop eyeballs from growing out of shape is
D
Hawaii is a truly beautiful place. Most people know Hawaii for its lovely beaches. However, Hawaii is also a land full of legends(传奇). One of the oldest legends tells of a special dance called the hula, which started here around 300 years ago.
One hula teacher tells the story of how the dance started. “The hula started, as far as the legend tells it, when Hi’iaki and her good friend Hopoe went down to the beach. And then, when they were there, they noticed the waves(波浪)…and they imitated the waves. And then started to use their hands…like showing the waves. That is how the hula started.”
However, not everyone has always liked the hula. In 1820, some religious people from Western countries came to Hawaii. The visitors were shocked by the hula because the dancers were not wearing many clothes. So they asked the local government to ban (禁止)the dance.
After that, most Hawaiians were not allowed to perform the hula in public for almost 60 years. But that did not mean the dancing stopped. Many dancers still performed the hula in secret.
The dance was always there.
Things have changed. At the moment, people of all ages want to study the old culture. They want to learn how to dance the hula. As a result, more and more people are attending halaus. Halaus are special schools that teach the hula in the traditional way.
Kumano is a hula teacher. For him, the dance is a way to bring the best of old Hawaiian culture to people today. Kumano says that the dance is not really about the body. He feels that it is more about the mind. He explains his feelings,”……the hula is more…….not so much a physical thing, but more of a metal thing. For new dancers ,the dancing means very little, because for Hawaiians today, many of them don’t speak the Hawaiian language. So ,what I try to do is to bring to mind the real thing they see today.”
54. Which of the following has the closest meaning to the underlined word “imitated” in this
passage?
A. Absorbed. B. Chased. C. Recorded. D. Copied.
55. Why was the hula banned for almost 60 years?
A .Because the local government found the movements of the dance were rude.
B. Because the religious visitors thought that the dancers did not dress properly..
C. Because the dancers realized it was not suitable to perform the dance in public.
D. Because the Hawaiian people believed the dance was not in fashion any more.
56. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Hi’iaki and her good friend Hopoe got the idea of the dance from nature.
B. The hula had already had a history of over 200 years when it was banned.
C. Many people attend halaus because they teach the hula in a modern way.
D. Kumano think that the hula dance is good exercise for people of all ages.
57. How do we understand that Kumano tries to bring to mind the real thing they see today?
A. He tried to help young Hawaiians understand the old culture better.
B. He tried to let new dancers feel the beauty of the Hawaiian language.

D. He tried to show local people that the hula can be different today.
