Step 1 Lead-in • What do you like to do during your spare time? Step 2 Three steps of reading literature
Step3 First reading—read the lines(plot) l Read the first part of the passage to find out its character, setting and plot. l How many times has the old man tried? l How many times has the fist swum away or turned? l Underline sentences related to his physical condition. Step 4 Second reading—read between lines (theme) l Read again and underline sentences related to the old man’s psychological and dialogue description, and then think about the old man’s personality traits. l Theme: Tough men can be physically destroyed but not mentally defeated. Step 5 Third reading—read beyond lines (writing style) l Why is the novel titled “The Old Man and the Sea” instead of “The Old Man and the Fisth”? l Brief introduction of Hemingway and his iceberg theory. l Read the novel again and think about the symbolic meanings of the old man, the fish, the shark and the sea. l Deep thinking: How to live in our changeable society? How to deal with our obstacles, both in life and in study? l The purpose of unique writing style. Step 6 Conclusion—how to read literature l First reading: read the lines –plot (What) l Second reading: read between the lines—theme (Why) l Third reading: read beyond the lines—writing style(How) Step 7 Homework l Read the novel After twenty years written by O Henry by using the three steps we have learnt today. l Write down the theme of the novel After twenty years and symbolic meanings of the main characters.
