IV. Teaching objectives:
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to
1. understand the definition and contents of the discourse analysis theory.
2. employ the discourse analysis strategies to improve the accuracy and efficiency of problem solving.
3. possess sensitivity to the English language, thus enhancing overall comprehension and deep understanding of English texts.
4. assess the English compositions from the aspects of structure, contents, logic and language etc. thus improving their critical thinking skills.
V. Teaching procedures:
Step 1. Lead-in
1) Free talk: Which questions are difficult for you in the test paper? List the question numbers.
2) Clarify the skills students are required to master and introduce the discourse analysis theory.
Step 2. To master
Present three typical examples to make students to understand the applications of discourse analysis theory in Gaokao examination.
Step 3. To practice
Activity 1: Enable students to classify the errors into three scales.
Activity 2: Divide students into 5 groups and ask them discuss about their errors, then invite a representative to analyze the questions for all.
Step 4. To apply
1. Transfer in reading comprehension: complete questions by using analysis skills learned above.
2. Transfer in composition: assess a sample composition from three dimensions according to an evaluation scale (评价量表).
VI. Assignment
1. Check the answers and think about the correct ones using the discourse analysis theory.
2. Recite and accumulate useful expressions given in students’ sheets.
