Teaching Objectives

1.    Conclude forms and rules of non-predicate verbs and employ them in the rational cloze

2.    Summarize rules of non-predicate verbs in reading comprehension and apply them in the exercise

3.    Employ non-predicate verb sentence patterns to make sentences and translate a short passage

4.    Build confidence in learning the grammar of non-predicate verbs


Teaching Important and Difficult points

1.    How to explain clearly about the concept and usage of each form of non-predicate verbs

2.    How to have students use non-predicate verb sentence patterns to make sentences and translate a passage correctly and properly


Teaching Procedures

1.    Step 1 Lead in

1)    T explains the difference of predicate verbs and non-predicate verbs by using a picture about characters in the legend of Zhen Huan.

2)    T introduces the importance of non-predicate verbs in college entrance examination.

2.    Step 2 Non-predicate verbs in rational cloze

1)    T presents a short introduction of the legend of Zhen Huan and extracts the forms of non-predicate verbs as well as the concept of time.

2)    By using a table, T shows rules of non-predicate verbs(action time/voice/sentence pattern).

3)    T has Ss do exercises to consolidate the rules of non-predicate verbs.

3.    Step 3 Non-predicate verbs in reading comprehension

1)    T has Ss conclude the usage of “to-infinitive” in reading comprehension (purpose) and encourages them to do exercises

2)    T has Ss conclude the usage of “Verb-ing” in reading comprehension (result) and encourages them to do exercises

4.    Step 4 Non-predicate verbs in writing

1)    T has Ss compare sentences and explain the reason why the sentence is better.(Verb-ing/Verb-adverbial enhance the complexity of a sentence)

2)    T has Ss make sentence chains to drill the sentence patterns (use “doing”, “done”, or “having done” as adverbial structures)

3)    T has Ss translate a paragraph into English by using as many non-predicate verbs as possible.

5.    Step 5 Summary and homework

1)    T summarizes the lesson by showing the translation

2)    T assigns homework
