By Wen Caixia

Step1: Lead in
Watch a video about small things and but things to lead in the new lesson.
Step 2 Read the cover
Guide the students to read the cover.
Find out something small and something big----a small boy and a big stone lion.
Step 2 Read the plot
Chapter 1

What did Luke think of the stone lions? (scary, big)
Be close to the stone lions (Read page 4-6)
Which words/sentences show the lions were big?
Did the small boy still think they were both scary?
What did he do with the stone lion?
(Remind them to circle some adjectives or verbs to support their ideas.)
Luke made friends with one of the stone lions

Chapter 2

² Which words/sentences show the men thieves were big?
² Did the small boy feel scared? How do you know?

Read the conversation between Luke and the two men to show How wise and clever the small boy was and How unfriendly and unkind the two big men were!
Chapter 3
Luke went back to the stone lions
What did Luke say to the stone lion, Rex?

Step 3 Read the headings , read the character and read the theme
After reading the headings, figure out the key words: small, big. Then ask the students to analyze the main character----Luke.
Luke is small but “big”. Can you make a sentence with “I think Luke is small but________ because__________”
(Remind them to find out some supporting evidence in the book.)
Based on students’ analysis, make a summary of the theme. The teacher set an example first, then guide students to work out the others.

Small acts make a big difference.
Small deeds get big returns.
Step 4 From text to self

What small acts did you see around you?
Based on students’ sharing, make a summary to sublimate the theme.
